Working people and Trade Unions

In the 19th Century workers joined together to form trade unions to protect themselves from unhealthy working conditions and exploitative employers.

Today too workers can face unsafe working conditions due to Covid-19 and employers who want to reduce their wages and holiday, sickness and pension arrangements.

Trade Unions can represent you at work and provide you with free legal advice. And of course the more that workers are united the stronger their bargaining position is!

You have a legal right to join a union. It’s illegal for an employer to disadvantage you because you are a union member.

More than 5.5 million people are in a union – from nurses to checkout assistants to lorry drivers to airline pilots, teachers and civil servants.
